When diagnosing rare lung disease, the human eye can only see so much. But with artificial intelligence, patterns in medical imaging that were previously invisible suddenly become clear.
In this episode, host Elizabeth Estes sits down with Dr. Helmut Prosch to explore the transformative role of artificial intelligence in diagnosing rare and fibrosing lung diseases. Dr. Prosch is the President of the European Society of Thoracic Imaging (ESTI) for 2026 and section chief of thoracic imaging at the Medical University of Vienna.
Dr. Prosch explains why AI isn't a threat to radiologists but a necessary tool, one that can detect patterns invisible to the human eye, extend specialist-level expertise to underserved regions around the world, and empower radiologists to catch lung disease years earlier than before.

Beschreibung

The Lung Lab is a podcast exploring how we are redefining rare and progressive lung disease. From how it is detected, to how it is measured, to how it is ultimately treated.
Hosted by Elizabeth Estes, Executive Director of the Open Source Imaging Consortium (OSIC), the series brings together clinicians, scientists, and technologists working at the intersection of imaging, data, and disease. Each episode gets into the real challenges holding lung disease research back, including inconsistent measurement and fragmented data, and highlights the breakthroughs and the people emerging to solve them.
From interstitial lung abnormalities to ILD, bronchiectasis, and beyond, The Lung Lab focuses on the diseases that matter most and the patients who cannot afford to wait. This is not just about innovation, it is about attempting to build a new foundation for how disease is understood.
