Technically astounding (the fact Nolan and his team pulled off most of this stuff in-camera is mind-boggling), very ambitious, intelligent, full of ideas and sometimes really thrilling, Tenet is also a strangely remote experience to watch (and there are some real clunkers in the script). Led by a cool and suave John David Washington, the film is like an amazing wristwatch, so intricate and beautifully made, obsessed with time, but without heart; you end up dazzled but not moved by it, and boy do you feel those 2.5 hours. Still, if you like your big movies with a big brain, and ever wondered what a Chris Nolan Bond movie would be like, check it out.

Good value since you will probably have to watch several times to begin to understand. Even then you will appreciate a synopsis

Just watched it for the action in the end.

Disappointed with the letterbox crop - such a shame seeing the huge bars on the TV and on the iPad screen. What’s the point of 4K if more than half the pixels don’t exist?!

Just purchased and watched Tenet today after deliberating over the mixed reviews. Much like the Prestige , Nolan’s previous finest, it contains multiple details and facets that reward repeated viewings. Nolan is certainly the thinking persons director and his films are the antithesis of the shallow popcorn flick. As for the sound mixing, I had no problems whatsoever with understanding the dialogue. I’m sure that in the future this film will receive the widespread credit it deserves. It is certainly a unique and creative experience in a world full of substandard remakes and recycled ideas.

I’ve never wanted to travel back in time as much as I do now. Maybe then I could talk myself out of watching Tenet and go and sort out my sock drawer instead

Please don’t buy

Saw this at the cinema during the brief period between lockdowns. It was worth watching; it’s intellectually challenging and requires your full attention, but I think I followed it reasonably well. I’m sure I’d get more from a second watch but, and here’s the reason it’s not a 5 star movie, I really don’t feel the need to watch it again. Not nearly as gripping or thrilling as it should be.

This film has received a lot of conflicting reviews. For me, as a Huge fan of Nolan, I was left wondering whether I wanted to love it or find it a baffling work of art.

After two watches, it certainly falls towards the masterpiece.

It’s visually stunning and intricately plotted. Huge credit should go to the Special Effects team for creating the main effects using practical effects instead of CG.

If the background volume was turned down and the audio turned up, more would be understood. And if possible, just a couple more minutes to take the time to explain more things.

I’d watch a sequel!

This film feels like there is half of it either edited out or yet to be filmed. I’m sure some will say it was simply too complicated for me but I genuinely like this type of film and sadly this one didn’t do it for me at all.

Nolan does not disappoint! The first half of the film is intentionally confusing but you have to pay attention and all will make sense in the second half. I did have to alter the audio settings on my TV for a clearer voice. Once that was fixed the film was incredible.

Bad sound, poor soundtrack. Bad storytelling. If I could get my money back I would ask for it.

I feel angry that I wasted my time, and brain power trying to understand this complete cr@p.

I love science fiction, but whatever this was trying to do was rubbish.

Mind blowing. Complex takes a few times to understand fully. But that’s the point. Use your brain and see a true cinema masterpiece.

Should have known I wouldn't like this... yep its a Christopher Nolan "BORVIE"! This is it, I mean it this time, I swear I'll never watch another over long self indulgent borvie from CN... I don't even want to write his name anymore. The movie was using one trick to justify itself as an original idea, bullets going back into guns. fan flipping fantastic...NOT! I'm almost certain they lost all track of the story timeline with all the inverting then uninverting then people being in the same timeline as their other inverted/uninverted self. Anyway I'm off to invert myself so I can forget this pile and hopefully decide the next time around I'll take the red pill...a much better movie. Maybe Christopher should watch it some time.

Great cast but a waste of time. You only know what happens in the last 5 minutes of the film.

This had loads of potential, but was spoiled by poor sound quality where the background music obscured the dialogue and the actors spoke with poor annunciation, which made me feel that I was always trying to catch up and always missing the explanations of what was going on, if there was one.

Sometimes I felt the writer assumes we all understand inverted realities and need no help to get it.

So, trying to understand the incredibly convoluted plot was very difficult. Half way through, and it’s a long movie, I had to put on subtitles which of course is a distraction. So, by the end I was glad it was over.

Good special effects. But was that the best thing? Probably.

The story is bizarre and there are many contradictions of that ‘reality’, which creates confusion.

I love sci-fi films but this is an absolute jumble that seems more about making a film than entertaining.

I read somewhere that this writer took years to create his other films and seemingly three weeks for this one.

Shame. A waste of time and money to rent it.

This film made no sense whatsoever

A rare misstep from Christopher Nolan, with very poor story telling, coupled with a nonsense time travel concept, making a garbled, pretentious movie that seemed far longer than its 2 hours 30 minutes. One of the worse movies I’ve see in a long time...

Definitely needs focus and probably a re-watch but its incredible and has one of the best soundtracks.

My issue with this film is the audio.

Music has been added at times of quiet/complex dialogue, which really distracts from the conversation. Can understand this might not be an issue for all, but for me it certainly was. It reminded me of a poorly produced radio broadcast where the background music is just too loud.

5 stars for the film itself, but the IMAX scenes on the iTunes version are cropped and not how the director intended them to be shown.

Lasted 20 mins and that was with perseverance. Protagonist suffers from cardboarditis. Story incoherent and unengaging. Can’t believe I wasted a fiver on that.

First things first, this movie is excellent! It moves at a constant, breakneck pace, with some awe inspiring action set pieces, and is completely engrossing throughout. The high concept plot is impossible to summarise within the confines of this review, but ultimately it’s a sci-fi spy thriller with a time travel theme. Yes, it’s a bit too clever for its own good at times, but rarely has 150 minutes passed so quickly. This is a tremendous cinematic spectacle, but I do have a major gripe, and that’s to concur with other reviewers here in that a lot of the audio is completely inaudible at times. Which, in a film such as this in which every line serves a purpose to the plot, is very much a problem. Entire scenes are rendered completely incomprehensible by a needlessly booming soundtrack, or bizarre post production choices for some dialogue scenes. This weird and inexplicable decision prevents this from being a 5 star review, as everything else was top notch.

Great movie - but you will need the subtitles on! I know it is ‘trendy’ to drown out the dialogue with music nowadays but this is a complex story and it’s just annoying to not be able to hear the dialogue

What on earth is this film about? A confusing plot where the basic concept wasn’t explained, this film comes across as a producer trying too hard to be clever. On top of that, the audio is terrible. Very quiet conversation is immediately followed by excessively load action scenes. I spent all of my time operating the volume control and trying to anticipate the next change in volume.

Don’t bother with this film.

Enjoyed this, brilliantly filmed but plot is hard to follow in the 2nd half. Worth watching.

How to start this review.....ummmmmm from the convoluted plot to the terrible audio throughout the film, then on top of that it’s overly long and the 3rd act had me scratching my head to the actual phrase to my friends was, does anybody have an actual clue what is going on and there reply NO 😂. And what is it with Nolan and terrible audio it’s not the first time in one of his films.

Disjointed and slightly confusing plot, to the point of being silly.

I have enjoyed most of Nolan’s films but I found this to be one of the most boring films I have ever seen. It’s hard to hear what is being said at times which doesn’t help with understanding the plot and it’s difficult to have any form of investment in anyone in the film.

Ignoring the plot holes aside. It was awful. The dialogue (purposely made this way) is quiet you can barley hear them. This makes the film hard to follow as you have virtually no idea what’s being said. Add in the permanent louder music and the loud sound effects. I wish I can go backwards and not have watched this film.

Bad movie with terrible sound.

This movie had real potential but just became way too confusing to enjoy. Poor sound quality meant you needed to have your volume quite high to hear the dialogue to even remotely understand what the hell was going on and then turn the volume down when the sound effects were too loud. Just spent the whole movie adjusting volume and getting confused with the plot.

Only worth watching for the location shooting & some visual effects. Sound is poor. Plot is poor - trying to be a bond film / matrix / twilight zone combo. The crazy physics is mainly just crazy. Hopefully no sequel.

Not even good rubbish, boring rubbish, don’t waste your money or your time

From the start the sound over powers any chance of understanding what actors are saying. Clever plot but hard to follow because of poor quality sound.

Usually a fan of this type of film. Couldn’t seem to get involved with the characters. Spent £13, couldn’t be bothered to watch to the end.

If you have nothing better to do than to watch this film 3 times then you may have a chance of understanding the plot. My advice would be don’t bother even watching it once, because ultimately it is simply boring and pointless on various levels.

The science is laughable. You can’t care about any of the characters because you have no idea what any of them are doing. Any deeper message the film might have is completely lost in the confusion.

The final insult to viewers is the unbelievably poor sound quality of the dialogue. This is often muffled and lost in the intrusive background noise. It wouldn’t surprise me if this was actually deliberate, just to make totally sure you have no idea what is going on.

I'm usually a fan of quality action movies with some cleverness. This is not in any way clever. It's totally pointless, the sound track is totally appalling if you want to understand any dialogue (or even what's going on), the direction of time-travel movement is pointless doesn't even make sense. The acting is terrible, the characters are totally characterless. A waste of money and time. I hope this speeds the demise of multiplexes, popcorn buckets, and Christopher Nolans everywhere.

I normally really enjoy Mr Nolan’s movies but this is one over complicated film to far...

Friends have recommended another watch but to be honest I really can’t be bothered.

From the off was mind blown

Really disappointed with this film which is a shame as it has a good cast but the characters are dull with no depth or personality speaking monotone throughout. The plot is so drawn out and ridiculously far-fetched it could have been over within an hour, I was willing this movie to end. All the positive reviews must be of a completely different movie!

This is one of those films you would have to watch more than once to make any sense out of it but it still wouldn’t be good.

If you thought inception was bad, stay away 👍🏼

Most confusing waste of time ever. Don’t give in to your curiosity. It’s truly awful.

If you’re brain damaged, you might find some enjoyment from it. But I doubt it.

Put down your phone and other distractions when watching this. If you can, turn up the volume to max to enjoy the brilliant sound track that accompanies the movie.

Like Inception and Interstellar before it, you need to pay attention to the narrative and what’s happening. If you do, you’re rewarded with a fast paced movie that takes no prisoners on either the action or complexity front. You’re just dropped into the action right from the opening scenes and the narrative, not the action, explains what’s happening and why all through the movie.

This is not a movie to emotionally engage with the characters - not because they’re shallow or the plot is thin. It’s more because there’s not any space for it in a highly unpredictable runaway speed movie.

Watch this if you enjoy high momentum complexity with good actors in amazing action scenes and a sound track to match. Alternatively, watch this if you like engaging your brain. Personally, I love it for both reasons and think it’s brilliant.

Incredible movie. Saw it at the cinema first time and wasn’t sure. Didn’t quite ‘get it’.

Watched it a second time at home and wow. Once it clicks, you can start to unravel each scene. Everything Nolan put in is intentional.

Every scene is connected. Watch it again, then again, then read and watch theories online. It’ll open your mind to the genius movie that Nolan has created here.

I think very strangely that this could be one of his best ever. Strangely because it took time and unraveling to understand why it is.
