I’ve not used this for a long time and had deleted. I decided to now re-download as it was showing the cloud with down arrow which normally indicates a purchased product (recently successfully did same process with Tayasui Sketches) Downloaded Good notes again and not accepting account or restore of purchase. Do I have to start again with a new purchase. I don’t want to do the Subscription, nor pay again. I would pay an upgrade price if the product is as good as you claim.

Goodnotes 5 is/was excellent hence the rave reviews here, however GN6 is simply the buggiest train wreck of a note taking app. Stick to GN5 or use something else until they sort themselves and GN6 out.

I will never understand why, in the digital world, they insist on limiting the size of the page to mimic a physical sheet of paper. What’s wrong with allowing the option of choosing infinite canvas? Why is this such an esoteric ask?

Version 6.2.7
I’ve been using goodnotes 5 for a long time and was very happy with it. After update and paying again for new version I noticed that goodnotes 6 is much slower and it takes ages to load my documents. I tested between goodnotes 5 and 6 and noticed that the old version is still much faster with the same load of documents. Sometimes it takes up to a minute to open the app! Additionally it often force closes during document editing. For now until this version is fixed I’m going back to goodnotes 5 as it’s much faster. Goodnotes 6 is much worse than the older version.

Gone downhill, unreliable

Version 6.2.7
Goodnotes has fantastic note taking ability. I moved from notability years ago. Unfortunately Goodnotes 6 is very unreliable. When using audio recording any crash results in total loss of the audio. There are lots of crashes around copying and pasting.
Goodnotes 6 is so bad, it’s almost like it’s not quite in beta, certainly not yet fit for public release.
It’s very disappointing. Support enquiries are not resolved or answered in a timely manner, by there own admission that they are overwhelmed. Hopefully they will in time get on top of it, but Goodnotes has been out for a while, and while they release new features, the reliability issues are not being fixed with sufficient priority.
It is not fit for use currently.

Tremendous new facility - search! - revised Feb 2020 and again 2023 because now much slower.

Version 6.2.7
No longer my favourite. The facility to download to goodnotes is now a disaster! Previously, when downloading from the web or anywhere else, the previous goodnotes folder would be the default destination. No longer. Now you have to find the requisite folder for each file. This is still a very annoying lack of attention to a fundamental part of my use of Goodnotes. So disappointing. And no response!

I don’t like updated version 6.

It was searched under Goodnotes 5 but that didn’t appear so this version was installed and an account created,
Having done that you get the first indication of the pricing structure and there is no free restricted option as in version 5.
Wouldn’t it be far better to state all that up front ?

I loved using GoodNotes everyday for my school work. It was my go to revision app with many notebooks and folders full of revision. However my app glitched and wouldn’t let me exit a quick note. The only solution was to delete it and re-download, giving me GoodNotes 6. Now I need to pay to use the app how I did even though I originally payed, and all my previous notes have been wiped. They are not in the trash folder and that was all my school work. I am not happy. I want my notes back!

I had high hopes:

Version 6.2.7
I saw so many people use this so I was hoping that I would love it too. As a student I need to write a lot of notes and I wanted to do it outside of the apps I used at school. Good notes it highly customisable for both pen and typing with loads of different fonts but because of this it falls short. It is trying to do too much at once and has become annoyingly finicky, to the point were I accidentally deleted my entire essay without being able to retrieve it again. For some reason every now and then it will try to convert me to using a pen when I’m typing. it clearly is meant to be mainly a pen focused app. However that does not excuse how impractical it is to type. Not only that, though I admit my handwriting is not the best, it becomes like a toddler’s when I write in good notes. I even have better handwriting attempting on a word document.

I gave 3 stars because as a radiography student, I like to draw my anatomy and colour it in using the highlighters. I don’t like how the colour of the highlighter darkens when you colour over somewhere you’ve coloured before (after you’ve lifted your pen/finger). Wish there was an option to remove this for those that don’t want it. Sometimes it’s nice to have it but most times it’s a little annoying.. also I wish the highlighters could go thinner than 1mm. please consider these in the next upgrade

I use this app so much for university and it’s perfect in every aspect bar two - I really want to be able to export to pdf without the cover page. I love the cover page for my Goodnotes organisation, but I can’t submit work with it. It means that I have to delete the cover page, export to pdf, and then re-add the cover page (which requires a few steps because understandably it’s not something the app developers expect to happen often).
My second, much more minor change, is the ability to lock a zoom level. I use an iPad mini 6, mostly horizontally, and I’d love the ability to lock my zoom level to just smaller than the full width of the screen (or any custom zoom really). Whether it’s the default when I rotate my iPad, or I had the options to select from preset/custom zoom levels that then lock in place I don’t mind, but I think both would make such amazing additions to an already near perfect app

Won’t be using this app anymore with the new update. Literally wants to charge £7 a month subscription to use. Plus, after payment to receive your documents, it’s apparently lost so you can get your old notes back either. Probably going back to pen and paper, way cheaper.

Crashing constantly, and when it does (which is whenever I try to switch between apps … even for a split second) (or just when my screen lock goes on ie 60 seconds) it takes forever and a day to load up again. It first started on my 2019 iPad, so I thought it was that being old. Went and bought the rolls Royce of iPads latest edition 2TB all singing and dancing (you get the picture), but it’s just continues to get worse. GoodNotes say it’s an iCloud issue, yet I have other apps that sync to the cloud that I have no problem with. Absolutely fed up with it now. I use it for my business and it’s totally failing me.
I’ve used it for years, and always loved it…. At the minute I can only rate it a 1 as it’s not something that I can find any advice on about fixing, I’ve ensured I’ve done everything I can find online and on YouTube, but to no avail…. Please please please sort this out 😭😭😭

I was a huge fan of Goodnotes 5. Enter Goodnotes 6. Suddenly we need to pay money AGAIN to use the app that’s now riddled with bugs. The new features (internal linking, layers) are fantastic but not at the cost of constant app crashes. Update 6.2.2 was a tipping point - it brought a bug that makes the app impossible to use in any productive way. Minimising the app for 5 seconds causes it to crash and then load 1-3 minutes. Goodnotes customer service doesn’t exist. I tried to reach out via their support service, on Instagram, Threads and Twitter (X) and nothing.
Seriously don’t bother with this. I will be cancelling my subscription.

Update? More like a downgrade

The app basically forced me to update to this Goodnotes 6 versions in order to keep my files synced with iCloud, even though it was promoted in their website that the user is not forced to update. They made the people who already paid for Goodnotes 5 pay again to DOWNGRADE their experience. The app adds nothing that is actually useful to students. Instead of adding actually helpful tools like occlusion tools or a brush to cover information and revise from it, they instead decided to make the UI harder to navigate through.
My complaints:
1- the app is overall slower and more laggy
2- scrolling is not even close to the smoothness that it was
3- everytime you leave the app the document has to reload for a few seconds, a problem that was not there in Goodnotes 5!
4- when I import a document now, it does not automatically select the file that I am in, instead it just automatically saves it in the document, so you have to make 10 extra clicks to get a feature that was there before this downgrade.
5- the app just decides to get stuck on a tool, even when it shows that you selected another one, it decided to keep using that one tool until you quit the app and restart it. ANNOYING!
Please make your updates actually useful if you’re forcing students to pay from already low income…
Awful.

I used to love goodnotes 5. But ever since upgrading to 6 I have had some issues. Mainly, when I write time to time the words go “missing” or disappear and I have to rewrite them. It is so annoying having to go back. And doesn’t help when I take notes in lecture AT ALL. Super annoying. Hate it so much. I wish I can go back to goodnotes 5.
And I also, dislike how just because my handwriting is not recognised there are red squiggly lines under my writing. It irks me so much. I wish there was a function to turn it off instead of having to click on ignore every single time. I only used to write notes on goodnotes because it did not have that function. I specifically don’t write notes on word for this exact reason, only for goodnotes to have this now.
I hope in a new update these get considered?

Still missing important features

Having been a user of Goodnotes 5 for the past 3 years, I was really excited about the launch of Goodnotes 6. Features such as the auto-correct option, easy lasso/eraser tool and coloured folders are things that I have been expecting for a long time. However, I was disappointed to see that I can still not export my highlights and comments as many other PDF/notetaking tools allow me to do. So, unfortunately, until I am able to either see and edit comments/notes that I have made in other annotation apps or export my notes and highlights from a PDF, Goodnotes 6 will remain as a spare app I use from time to time rather than the main one. Zotero has amazing PDF annotation tools and exporting capabilities that Goodnotes could take a look at and implement.
Another suggestion (not necessarily a must-have) would be some sort of integration with Notion.

Over a couple years ago I paid ~£10 for this app on the store and now with the recent update it is now asking for me to hand over another £23 to keep using it. The initial payment was assumed to be one off payment to use it forevermore. I have now been put on “freemium” which really isn’t even that good as it only allow for 3 of my several notebooks to be editable - why? This is without me going into the optional monthly subscription and micro transactions that have now appeared onto the app. This app used to be the reason to ditch physical notebooks, now with it doing whatever it can to pry more money out of its user base, it is now the reason to go back to them. In the meantime I’m going to be archiving my years worth of notebooks from the app before it locks them all behind a paywall. Until GoodNotes can make the app free for long term users like myself, I will not be using or recommending it. Even if you are new to goodnotes now, it will probably ask for more money from you to use the app when it goes to its 7th version.

Having paid for the app, I had used this app throughout my 1st and 2nd year undergrad for note taking. It was brilliant. As the services this app provides I’m not going to give this a 1 star. But, what I used to have access to now within this app has now been put behind an expensive subscription wall. As a university student who I already struggling with finances, I can no longer use this app, it is baffling to see so many basic features made inaccessible. Personally, I could justify I have had my money’s worth from when I bought it long ago. Although I can imagine for those who acquired the app more recently, that this would be incredibly frustrating. This is definitely the wrong move for good notes, and I can only see the other note taking apps becoming more successful because of this paywall decision.

I’m so happy with this app, it has a lot of features and options to feel like a real notebook while keeping things beautiful and neat with easy edits, it’s really friendly and intuitive, and very pretty. I was so happy to find something with a lot of options in its free version, without ads or trial period, and very happy to pay its extremely reasonable one-time payment for the complete version. It doesn’t add a lot but that’s showing you how much they let available for free which is a testament to their kind spirit. They also give the app completely for free to schools which I find, again, very cool and kind. This all made me want to buy the product to support them and thank them even if I could probably have been fine with the few locked features. Highly recommend it!

I have started a study programme at work and this app is a godsend - when it works. It’s miles better than the app provided by the course provider for reading and annotation, especially with the great Apple Pencil support and he ability to slot in blank note templates into existing study manual PDFs. However, it crashes CONSTANTLY. If I spend an hour studying, the app will randomly crash 3 or 4 times in that period. I haven’t lost any work yet as a result, but it’s still annoying. It also has an issue with thumbnail view, whereby it will be crashing pretty much every time I use it and if it doesn’t crash, it will go back to beginning of the document when I open that view. Thumbnail view is therefore completely unusable which is a problem when your document is hundreds of pages long. Successive updates haven’t fixed the issue.

Very happy with this app

I recently swapped to using GoodNotes from OneNote after seeing other people using it and I don’t think I’ll be going back anytime soon. Being able to open notebooks in tabs and easily access them simultaneously is super handy and the different tools (the shape tool especially) are so much better than other apps I’ve used.
I do however, have a couple of gripes: the palm rejection feature is very effective, however, every time I want to change the orientation of my screen, I’m either zoomed too far in, or too far out. Would be so much better if perhaps the page can snap to size so that it fills the whole screen, without me having to fiddle getting it to the right size
The other problem is that whilst I like to browse the temporary store, I’m never going to pay for what are essentially templates at the prices being shown. They are far too expensive.

Downloaded this app before returning to Uni for a masters. I remember 6 years ago doing my first degree how many file blocks were used, the hassle of carrying lots of books and papers. With good notes i have not needed to use a pen or paper since starting this course. A very powerful app, really makes the ipad a very useful device. Love how i can take screenshots off my mac and paste directly into the ipad (apple possibly to thank for that innovation) but then annotate the screenshots in this app is super useful. All my lecture notes are saved onto good notes which lets me annotate them as the lecture takes place, far far handier than how it was back in the day printing lecture notes out 6 slides to a page and scribblig over small previews of each slide. Now i have the full slide per screen and can easily add pages to the document to add in extra notes based on explanations the lecturer gave. The best app i have put on the ipad and worth every penny.

I’ve used this app during my undergraduate 3rd year and my Masters and it never failed me. My notes were always nicer to read, vibrant, easily accessible compared to others. Really intuitive, works amazing with the Apple Pencil and base model iPad, I’ve tried other tablets like Remarkable etc and they’ve failed me greatly, the colours and images and everything you can do with this app is superior.
Would recommend to anyone, and even now I still will carry on using this app for note taking on professional courses etc, it’s almost unbeatable. Do wish there were more free templates but it’s got what you need.
For PDF, it only has markup functions, the best app for that would probably be pdf expert as it has text editing too etc built in but this is nice for general markups (better than anything Adobe offers without paying a ridiculous price).

Way better than Noteability

I generally enjoy the writing experience here more than it’s competitor and like the flexibility of being able to drop things in the (M1) Mac app and have them appear here. Also being able to export in several useful ways directly into another app I use is great.
For me the number one reason to buy this over subscribing to Noteability is that you only need to pay once and aren’t being held to ransom on an annual basis. If I want to add more functions and purchase templates I can choose to do so, and I’m not being forced to pay to keep my notes. I used to recommend Notability to students, but now I wholeheartedly recommend GoodNotes instead. Better functions and better value, who can say no to that?

Okay but room for improvement

I use this app on my macbook air - It is good and notes can look really neat and presentable, however, there are a few things that make using the app difficult. You have to highlight text multiple times to change the font, colour or size as it hardly ever works first time. Sometimes it doesn't work at all and you need to close down the app and re-open it. It also makes my macbook fan go absolutely crazy. I don't use any other apps on my macbook and i close down everything that is open when using goodnotes to see if this helps, but the fan is still so loud. As soon as I shut down the app, the fan turns off - my macbook is fairly new, I purchased it 2 years ago and have never had any issues with the fan. The fan issue is extremely frustrating, especially when using the app during lectures in a quiet lecture theatre.

I love this app and have been using it for years. However, since Sunday I have experienced a lot of problems with it. My hobby is digital planning and I have got into that thanks to GoodNotes. However, on Sunday when I tried transferring some December and Christmas digital stickers my app started crashing when in split screen or overlapping. I have tried everything: updating my iPad, disabling auto backup, deleting pages from my digital planner (which was painful), making a new version of my digital sticker book (this version still crashed!) and finally gave up and organised my stickers in folders thinking that I would just use them instead of my sticker book. However when I tried the app continues to crash in Split View or overlap!!! I decided to give this app another chance and updated it immodestly as soon as I saw the latest update. However IT IS STILL CRASHING!!! I have tried EVERYTHING and am seriously at the point of giving up on digital planning due to the hours and tears wasted over the past several days trying to plan my week with constant crashes. PLEAASE FIX THIS so that I can continue to enjoy my hobby. I have spent a lot of money and time and really would not want it to go to waste!!! Once again PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE OR GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ON WHAT I CAN DO! I have tried EVERYTING on the GoodNotes website and am REALLY FED UP!!!!!!!’

I’m not usually one to leave reviews for apps but I’ve had to make an exception for this one. What more could I ask for - it’s so simple to use, a variety of different styles of notebooks to suit every need, easy to take notes, to make your notes visual and memorable, so easy to navigate as well.
I feel like I find a new thing every time I use it that makes it so much better - the option to lasso sections of my notes and move it to a better position on the page or copy/paste/cut/resize - the fact that I can erase highlighting without erasing the text is 👌👌
I’m currently using the app to aid with my learning of Korean and it’s actually made revising and taking notes so much more enjoyable. With my practical workbook, instead of having to print off multiple pages, I can open it in good notes and edit as I need. And the convenience of being able to carry around all my notes stored on my iPad makes things so much easier. I use this app everyday since I downloaded it and can honestly say it’s the best £6.99 I’ve ever spent 😂

missing some key features

i like this app, it is better than other note taking apps however it’s missing a couple things that would make it great.
1) a duplicate button. yes you can use the current page as a template for the next page but it isn’t the same. i made my own template to go on top of the flashcard feature and i had to keep replacing and fitting it every page. imagine doing that for over 100 flash cards. it would also be useful for using the same picture on one page and annotating in a different way, just like on google slides.
2) the flashcard feature is pretty bad. i wouldn’t want to use anki or quizlet as they are difficult to use with an apple pencil however the way to “study” the flash cards is impossible. it should have more options on how to study your flash cards, whether you want to do it back to front or quiz yourself in a specific order. the current and only setting is completely random and useless. the app developers should take notes from other flash card apps.
overall i feel a couple other improvements to allow more flexibility on the app would be useful such as customising templates etc. sometimes i feel restricted on what i can really do and it’s a lot of work to do simple things.

Just like pen and paper, but better.

Will never go back to pen and paper. Simple but enough features to tailor it to your own needs. I use on iPad Air with apple pencil. I thought I wouldn’t like the fact that the iPas screen is much smaller than the A4 paper i was to writing on, but this wasn’t an issue at all. Just a few things that annoy me: - When drawing objects with multiple strokes & images, would be so helpful to be able to “join” them together, so they act as one object. - Switching between colours & pen sizes can be cumbersome. I switch very often, so would be great if there was a quicker way - maybe using the double tap on apple pencil, multiple finger gestures, a floating tool box… - An eye-drop colour picker tool would be nice. - Custom highlighter colours. I’ll add more if I remember… But otherwise fantastic.

This app absolutely blows all other note and productivity apps out of the water. The interface is so self explanatory and user friendly. It works seamlessly with pdf notes typically given by education institutions these days. Using these notes you can annotate the notes in any way you want, insert your own typed or written pages and insert more images and pages seamlessly. It’s just so good I often have a little exclamation when I find a new feature which is just so intuitive and helpful. THIS APP makes the choice between another tablet like a remarkable 2 and an iPad an absolute no brainer, it works fantastically with the Apple Pencil and massively helps your handwriting look better especially when writing zoomed in where the resolution is held (if not improved) unlike many other apps. This app is also perfect with the multitask side car to host notes or Question sheets whilst writing in a notebook on the app. The files are automatically saved to an iCloud folder, my cloud service of choice, but I’m sure it would be equally easy to host on a different service. This way, whenever I want to access or upload content via my laptop I can do so in real-time. Honestly, if you are put off by the price, don’t be, it’s the best value purchase you will ever make, especially given a pack of coloured pens is almost the same price these days. 10/5 for me.

Loved this app till the recent update.

This app has been a great go to for my daily journaling as well a my studies and web dev lifestyle. The only problem I had was on the Mac sometimes you’d click to add or edit text and it wouldn’t type. You had to click outside the box then click back in to get it to work. I could live with that but I hoped this latest update was going to fix that but it has sadly made text unusable! Now I have to click multiple times in and out of the text box on the Mac to get it to work and on my iPad I am having the pages go blank, freezing and text will sometimes type or copy etc other times it won’t. I am so upset and am having to spend an entire day switching to a different app as I can’t use the text tool as I need to and should be able to do. Developers please fix this ASAP.

Excellent note app for college but id like to see some features get added. ie: automatically adding a date at the top corner of a page or somehow get the app to track the date a page was made so later on you can find a page by filtering by date. Id like to see some ore customisation options for the pen/pen type. Also when writing text with the text box feature, it types more vertically than horizontally and doesnt fully fill up the lines automatically. You have to change the text box width manually to fix it. Also with the text feature, the text doesnt align properly with the lines of the page so you have text going through lines or leaving gaps. And finally, for some reason when you use the apple pencil, ive noticed that if im writing then i look up at the board then back down to take notes, its switched itself to the eraser and i have to double tap the pencil to switch back even though i didnt double tap to go tap the eraser to begin with. And also sometimes when you try to erase soemthing, it leaves small specs of ink that it wont let you rub and it just sits there. The settings menu feels abit empty as there isnt much to customise the app and features and function to your own liking and needs. Its mostly just simple settings there.

Would be the best 5/5 notes app if they would address 3 very key points.

++Add an Endless paper document type, like a whiteboard which can expand in any direction.
Cannot stress this enough. Notes sometimes work best when they can grow organically, one idea spreading to others. Paginating between content pages is often not suitable to see context behind the current active working area and it can completely break one’s flow. Please implement this. I am having to switch away from GoodNotes because of this shortfall! It’s a digital medium, let’s make highly practical but physically impossible paper types like this.
++ Change folder icons to a custom image.
All folders are the same blue icon. Terrible discoverability if you want to effectively curate your notes.
++Ui items to the right of the apps toolbar strip are inaccessible when in Side-by-side mode. Please remedy this by allowing the tool strip to be scrolled by dragging or even add an arrow.
Aside from these problems, the app is flawless. The controls are otherwise intuitive and the input methods are handled well. I want to 5 star this, I just can’t when it has these utterly glaring oversights present. I hope the developers do address the endless paper type at very least so this app is actually valuable. As it stands, I’m regularly having to use other solutions that are inferior In all other ways.

I am a sixth form student who wanted a place to write my notes on my ipad so they were all together and I could easily take them with me anywhere. I took a chance with GoodNotes and I do not regret it. It is so simple to use, and the different features make it so good for notes and revision. The flash card function meant I saved so much time having to make my own on paper and the ability to sort them into how well I did on each one really has helped my revision. I could google exam papers online and export them directly into GoodNotes for me to write on the actual paper, meaning I wasn’t wasting paper printing thousands of exams off and it was so much quicker to then mark with the highlighting tools and even cut the answer and import it in from the mark scheme. For any student needing a revision tool or place to write their notes, this is definitely it- 100% recommend.

Firstly this app is amazing. The options and current versatility are fantastic but there are a few things that would make it the unquestionable number one app for note taking within iOS. First a dropper for colour would be well received, it would allow for easy-access use of a colour scheme and easier repeated use of previous custom colours. Secondly, to change the colours of folders would raise the aesthetics of this app (already made great with customisable notebook covers) to 5 star. Finally, and most important, please please please add a hyperlink option. As an already functioning feature with pre-made books, the option to add in links as you work, rather than fiddle in another application trying to create a tabbed notebook would make this app seamless and unimaginably perfect for students- who I imagine are a huge portion of the demographic!!!!

I love this app, it makes all the difference to my research as I can download articles, pictures and clippings straight into the app and annotate as required.
There is just one problem - the search facility could be improved. I have thousands of pages of text in my folders and notebooks, but if I search for a word it only picks out words I’ve handwritten, or type font in *some* PDF articles - the vast majority of my notes, culled from newspaper clippings etc, do not work with search. The result is I have to be a bit more careful labelling my documents otherwise I risk losing them in a sea of pages.
I don’t know why word recognition can pick up my bad handwriting but not newspaper text? Otherwise this app is a godsend, I rely on it to organise and collate data.

Using for University - couldn’t recommend enough! Here’s the pros and cons:

Fantastic app for taking notes - exceptionally adaptable for multiple people’s styles of note-taking. Has changed how I learn from my university course for the better.
Pros:
Well thought out UI and intuitive tools make note taking super easy. Works seamlessly with the Apple Pencil. Has given a structure to my course notes I previously wouldn’t have been able to achieve - especially given my notes are now always with me! (I’m a disorganised person, this app keeps me in check!)
Cons:
Only ever had 3 issues but these aren’t enough to drop my rating!
1) PowerPoint slides occasionally don’t fully display correctly (I.e. the odd word is off a page). But a quick conversion to PDF format fixes this.
2) Quickly filled up space on my iPad, probably due to my use of images and detailed drawings (mostly not the apps issue!) so needed to purchase cloud storage.
3) Drains your battery like a bucket with a hole in it - So need to have your charger on you if you have a full day of lectures, and if the app is open while charging it often doesn’t actually gain charge!

It’s a neat, well-designed tool for making notebooks and handwriting in them, or drawing in them. You can search in them inside GoodNotes *only*. These features put it on about the same level as the built-in Notes application that Apple ships on every iPad.
While it makes big claims about PDF export and handwriting recognition, be warned these are afterthoughts (currently - the forum is full of requests for this to be overhauled). You can export either a PDF, or a plain-text document of a single page of text at a time. If you have a multi-page document, the text export will produce as many text files as you have pages. There’s no mechanism to batch recognise notebooks.
The PDF export makes no use of the text recognition that the application performs *anyway*, which seems an oversight. You can’t open the PDF and select text in other applications, as it just exports a picture - it makes no effort to embed the text into the PDF so it may be recognised.
The pieces are all there, but they’re not quite baked properly yet. Despite hearing great things about this application, these major shortcomings means you’d be better off using either Apple’s defaults or other tools for capturing things like lecture notes or longer forms of writing.

I used to really enjoy using this app! I used it for so much: work, bills, tracking, medical stuff, notes. You name it, I probably used it for that.
I generally use an apple pen with it as I’m disabled and have bad hand tremors but the latest update has made this a little more difficult. As an example, if I had highlighted something, but wanted to move the text that’s underneath a little without moving the actual highlight, I used to be able to click the text function, then the text box and just drag it around with my pen. Now when I try that, it draws lines and words as it thinks I’m trying to write. So I either have to move it with a shaking finger and have the text accidentally end up on the other side of the page, or move everything with the lasso function then redo all my highlighting from scratch. Workable but not ideal, especially when it’s whole pages of things that then need fixing.
Prior to the last update, this app would have been 5* for me, but unfortunately I don’t find it quite as accessible for me now.

I have used Goodnotes for a long time now on an Ipad and Its the best hand notes app on the market in my opinion but recently I have been needing to access the app and my notes on my computer too. The sync works great between the two devices.
But the app shows that it is not as smooth on the computer than on the Ipad in the ammount of glitches that the app has. When using the text tool (which is the most important tool when using a desktop for me) - always glithes when I try to edit the text and move the text about. The text tool can also sometimes have this glitch where when I press the button and then try to deselect the tool - it wont let me and I cant press anything else.
It is just really annoying and in the end I just dont use the app at all. I would be very thankful if you sorted those annoying small glitches out for the desktop version to make the app once again an all time favourite for coss compatibility use!
Thank you for reading

I have been using good notes for about a year now and everything about this app i love. The writing experience is top notch it feels just like writing on paper with the right screen protector. It has helped me take amazing notes and brain storm and use it as a jotter at certain times with it’s quick note feature, oh and the hi lighting Is PERFECT, as someone who has used both GoodNotes and notability my choice is good notes 95% of the time the only reason that is not 100% is because of two features i think it is lacking. The first is being able to lock documents with a password or Face ID or really speaking any form of security because I keep my journal in there and I would feel a lot more secure if I were able to lock it but either way I’m sure that is something we will get soon and the last one is being able to record audio in the lesson. But yeah other than that would really recommend this is an outstanding app it helps my workflow so much and I’m sure it can help yours. It’s worth it!

This App is amazing for the Ipad’s with the apple pencil support. There are many things great about it but the reason I am writing this is just to mention a few glitches that can be very annoying whilst using the app. For example when you want to rub something out with the rubber tool sometimes if I have rubbed everything out some of the ”inc” stays there after I have taken the pen off and then soon after disappears. This is my only biggest issue and I would love it if the team could look into it 👀 and try and get it fixed! A big problem for me is that we are not able to choose what you want in front of what clearly, the text box is not going in-front of the picture box. It would be great to be able to see clearly what is going in front of what.
Thank you so much for creating such a productive amazing helpful app that I can rely on and use every day! I definitely recommend it to future clients!

The app provides an efficiently-organized platform which is great for ones who are looking for somewhere to create their notes or even just store their drawings. It contains several features that influences those who perhaps are not well introduced with digital note taking and enhances a learners perspective. It is also a great source of encouragement and because of the many inspiring features, a huge color pallet, multiple fonts and all of the customizable features, inspires learners to branch out and explore which type of learner they really are. I have found my learning has really been enhanced and I am more encouraged to now write notes digitally through GoodNotes5:which compared to pen and paper, note taking is no longer tedious and boring.
Thank you.

I use this app everyday for school work i am still so impressed how it works so well with the iPad and apple pencil, I especially like it for subjects such as maths and chemistry. The usability of it immediately being on every device is so nice to have and how you can organise all your notes into folders and subfolders with notebooks. Ive been using this app for 4 months almost 5 hours a day and i still find undiscovered features like adding custom page templates through files. However the app could still add some features which would make it flawless. In order of importance to me: A fill tool to fill shapes with colour after you have drawn it; the ability to write full screen with no bar at the top of at least a minimised version; more options for the highlighter tool such as an outline for where it will highlight such as a black 50% opacity ring around the size of highlighter and the option to turn off highlighter layering so it doesn’t make the colour darker; a recent colours section; a protractor, compass and ruler tool for improved maths and shape drawing and the ability to change the colour of selected writing for example from black to red. Thanks for making such an incredible app.

Glad I found this

Although I already had a Mac Air, I am new to IOS and am really enjoying most aspects, especially this app -GoodNotes5. It works well and synchronises beautifully across the two devices. I appreciate the folder system, as that's my preferred method of organisation. I love being able to handwrite on pdf's as well as making my own notes.
One thing I find difficult is the handwriting to text. I appreciate that this is mainly a notes app for handwriting, but occasionally I need to add text. The "write by hand, select, CONVERT, copy, then paste" method works, but is a long procedure and the resulting sizing always surprises me! Using the Text Box facility has been unreliable for me. I know I could use the onboard keyboard, but would like to use the pencil, but more often than not, I cannot get it to work within the text box. It may be me!
Generally though, deighted to have this app. It's the one I use most frequently on my IPad

After long research back when I've purchased this app - I can say it suites my needs the best, rich in features, UI is precise and convenient. I honestly stopped using paper for my nots after getting myself an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Easy to manage, share, search, modify. And now it is also available on the PC which is an amazing feature when you want to access your notes and drawings. Hesitating between 5 and 4 stars just because sync between the two doesn't feel so seamless, the other day I opened the app on my computer and the notes that I've taken days ago weren't there, until I opened iPad, and switched to another document & back. Otherwise it is a perfect note taking choice in my personal experience and opinion.

I am very happy with GoodNotes and prefer it to many other note taking apps on the market. It is fantastic when using Apple Pencil and I like that you can have individual notebooks that can be stored within folders, similar to that of any other file system. A feature that I would like to see implemented is that the file system be completely integrated with iCloud files. I understand that it works with iCloud, so that any notes saved can be accessed by any other GoodNotes app but I would also like to be able to access them directly from files. In addition, another feature I’d like to see is being able to scroll a page up past the bottom of the page, so that when using Apple Pencil and writing at the bottom of a page, my hand isn’t half hanging off of the iPad.
These are just minimal features but would be nice to see but overall a fantastic app and will be continuing to use for the foreseeable future.

Quite good

I really got excited about GoodNotes5 and planned to take all my meeting notes for work directly onto my iPad. I purchased a licence even before it was made into a bundle. However, it hasn't really met my expectation; the licence I bought will not allow me to put it on my two work laptops, iPhone and iPad - one is an old Mac I use as my office workstation set up in my study at home, the other is my newer Mac that I use for working while I'm out and about and travelling. I also always carry my iPad which I had hoped to be my writing pad along with GoodNotes5. It will sync with my traveling laptop, but refuses to sync with my home station! I guess it's a licence thing - but I do not love it enough to pay for two licences. I have persevered with the direct note taking which is good, but tricky at speed (I find). Anyway I am partially hoping some one from GoodNotes will read this and cut me some slack with the licencing so I can sync across all my devices - my iPhone as well!

Simply the best

Simply the best note-taking app for the iPad. Writing is very fluid, deals with palm rejection very well. Mirroring to external displays without furniture appearing is a nice touch and makes this useful for presentations that involve writing in real time (eg when teaching). I use it also also to manage and read PDFs as well as annotate them.
I have recommended it as the go-to app for colleagues who have recently been issued with iPads for the first time. The responses have been uniformly positive.
The one feature that would make this a one-stop-shop for all my needs would be to display a page I’m writing on in real time on a Mac, as then this would allow (furniture-less) real time notes to be shared over video calls. I know it can be done with third party airplay receivers but we’ve not found this to work reliably in all network environments. (But that I think is an airplay bug rather than an issue with GoodNotes itself).

Changed the way I work forever

Been using this to study for my post grad degree and omg i have been recommending this to everyone. It really makes my workflow so much more efficient. Some of my work is quite repetitive and i love that I can just copy the same graph/axes to draw on as many times as I need. I have every single colour pen at my disposal. No more twenty notebooks and two pencil cases! (I'm not exaggerating!) I use this app for everything from uni registration, studies and even writing on any forms and pdfs for personal use. So so so much paper saved as I just have a scrap paper tab open and i can continuously erase it for calculations. I no longer have to tear pages out of my books because notes aren't pristine and perfect. And it backs up to google drive for extra security!!!
I will say it's not yet perfect. I wish there was a table drawing function and a dropper tool to select colours from an image or on the page.

Brilliant app, needs adjustments

I use this app for nearly every aspect of uni and work and I'd be pretty lost without it, it jsut means I notice when some features could do with improvemet.
Features I think could do with improvement:
- Sub/Super script capability or an equation tool for maths notes
- The text colour selection glitch and in general more support for text imput
- Continuity with presents and pen sizes from ios to mac
- Ability to print individual pages from ios/mac (if this is possible it doesn't work for me)
The auto-shape tool
- It would be useful to be able to move selected items from page to page rather than jsut cutting and pasting them
- It would be useful to be able to make templates fit better, sometimes when I have made my own templates the sizes have fluctuated a lot even if I have set them to the same size (this is probably my error but it would be good if it was easier to do)
- Ability to add recordings or vidoes to notes (I relaise its PDF based but this would be such a good feature for study)
- I use a revision notes app alongside goodnotes, if good notes produced a compatible flashcard app/feature that would be amazing but also a long shot :)
This probably seems like I hate the app but I use it every day and would be lost without it - the best app purchase I made at uni. I usually type my notes on good notes and use my apple pencil for studying and this allows for both.

Fantastic app

This app is extremely functional and easy to use and understand. I love the automatic switch back feature from the eraser tool as it saves me so much time when taking notes on a time limit. There’s only one tool that stopped me from giving it five stars and it’s more of a feature request than anything: THE HIGHLIGHTER. When using dark paper, the highlight option basically becomes useless. As soon as I highlight, it fades into black and into the background so I’m unable to tell what colour it even is. I understand that this makes it seem more realistic in a sense, however I would really appreciate being able to see the highlighter just like it slows on white paper. The highlighter options on black paper are very grim and don’t show up as bright as pen colors do. True highlighter colors showing up on black paper would be an awesome addition I feel, and hopefully not too difficult a feature to implement! If so then an adjustable opacityfor the highlighter tool on dark paper will do just as great. Also Highlighting which does not change color of text written with pen would be good. When you highlight over writing it changes the original colour which can be very annoying at times. It would make this app the undisputed king of note taking in my honest opinion. Please let me know if this can be done.

Good app but...

Goodnotes is a good app (hence the name) with many features you can use easily as a student etc. From a range of colours in the palette to a handy lasso tool to help with last minute mistakes. I would recommend this as it has a nice shapes feature and a useful stylus and palm rejection where you will be able to lean on your iPad without causing marks. However, using the Apple Pencil on this is a terrible thing. The app is really rough with writing and has no fluidity at all. The ink writing is too too accurate in a bad way in which all your letters are not from your paper writing. I decided to finally go paperless until I stumbled upon this issue. In my and others’ opinions, my handwriting is immaculate on paper however when I try writing in the app, the roughness causes it to be inconsistent and absolutely ugly. There’s other apps that have nice fluidity and consistent writing like nebo.

As a university student I take tons of notes and used to waste so much paper. I had to haul around huge folders and when I lost something...well too bad. Now I have my notes safely stored in my cloud, can change and add something however and whenever I want and the only thing I have to carry around to have access to my accumulated knowledge is my trusty iPad. Taking notes with pen and paper is both wasteful and inefficient but simply typing on a laptop doesn’t let me actually retain the information. I can’t believe I haven’t switched sooner.
The app itself is both intuitive and reliable. Although I didn’t have any experience with digital note taking so far, I was able to find any feature I needed right away and discovered several other useful ones on the way.
GoodNotes is definitely worth the 7.99 they charge.
Only thing I wish it would be added are lecture recordings.
Keep it up!

I use this app mainly for my private tutoring business alongside my own studies. It is great being able to import PDF documents, annotate as I like and then export either the annotated doc or the original in-annotated doc.
There are a lot of good features of this app, I love the different colours, being able to set my own pre-set colours to make them quicker to find, and being able to change the pen.
Being able to search my handwritten notes for key words is a great feature, as well as being able to search the original PDF document.
There are lots of other excellent features that I won’t go into, and I am glad of some of the changes they made to GoodNotes 4, but conversely don’t like some of the changes which make the app harder to use than it’s predecessor.
I would recommend this app for people looking to use PDF’s and similar to work, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a note-taking app for lectures, meetings, etc, hence why I have only given it four stars. I use this in conjunction with Notability, which is far more useful as a note-taking app, where GoodNotes is far more useful as an app to complete my work on.
If GoodNotes were to incorporate features such as sound recording during note-taking it might become my one and only note-taking app, but until then I will have to flit between the two.

I bought GoodNotes 5 yesterday for £7.99 and downloaded it on my iPhone as I was at work and not near my iPad Pro.
When I got home I tried to install it on my iPad but it wouldn’t install. I’ve uninstalled from my iPhone now and tried to install from iCloud onto my iPad. Instead, it installed GoodNotes 4 and now whenI try to install version 5 which it said was free I just keep getting the error message ‘Unable To Download App. GoodNotes 5 could not be downloaded at this time.’ I’ve tried to install over 10 times now with no luck.....same error message every time.
I’ve made sure iOS is up to date on my iPad Pro but I keep getting that error message which is so frustrating considering I purchased version 5, not 4. I’ve been on GoodNotes website and there’s no contact form to send a message to the developer, no email address, no way of contacting anyone. So now I’m stuck with GoodNotes 4 instead of the version 5 which I purchased. How do I cancel the purchase when there’s no contact details???

great but with feature requests (see below!)

i recently got an iPad and was researching about both goodnotes and notability and decided to go with goodnotes since i could get it ipad and phone for one price which was cheaper than notability.
however, i’ve rated it 4 stars as there a couple features i wish was on goodnotes which could make it more better and more appealing to users after they buy it.
1) split screen view
goodnotes did tweet that they were waiting for ios 13 to do this i think so i know that’s definitely coming which is good.
2) recordings
one of the things that makes me keep looking at notability is the recording feature. as i am a uni student it is a great feature that i could have when attending my lectures.
3) macOS version of goodnotes
i’m aware they have the macOS version in the US but i don’t know why they wouldn’t for the UK. this is another thing that makes me look at notability as it has all three versions available to me.
overall, as a student it has great features for me and it didn’t take that long to get used to and i feel very in control of my notes and happy going back over them than i did before using a physical notebook. however if goodnotes sees this i hope they consider the 3 requested features i have listed.

Amazing Interface but there are a lot of new glitches

The update is a 180 degree change from the previous version which is why I didn’t hesitate to download it despite being content with GoodNotes4. However there are quite a lot of glitches that are hindering the full potential of the app. 1) more often than not the app gets stuck whenever I attempt to flick through the pages and to fix it I change it from reading mode to editing mode before going back to reading mode again, this usually fixes it until the next time it happens. 2) the pen tool gets stuck sometimes I.e. if I’m scribbling something the text will get dragged out of the line or it’ll create a random line that extends across the page 3)the random “connect to Bluetooth to use GoodNotes” message that appeared only when I wasn’t using the app. The glitches are making me contemplate going back to the older version which was much more functional. I hope these issues are improved on in the next update!

Expected more from GoodNotes

I have been a goodnotes fan since my paperless journey began. I had been using goodnotes 4 for roughly 5months during school and i loved it - i thought it was overall a good and functional app with some little annoyances (i would post about it on the goodnotes feedback website). Ive been using goodnotes 5 since the release and it just seems like a mess. Seems like the creators just tossed it up in the App Store - so much was promised and I haven’t seen anything extraordinarily new (I was really looking forward to the split screen option but nothing) and the app is so buggy. Please give us the categories section again!!! Like on goodnotes 4 - it’s annoying having to get out of a file and click back back back back to get to all my files. Nothing new, nothing special, going to check out notability.
(Edit: also where’s the mac version i loved switched through all my devices on goodnotes 4. Just seems so sloppy to release an app that seems to be finished)

Lost my notes

Thought this app was amazing. It was really easy to write on and make notes. Used it since it came out for my notes as an everyday lesson book. After a couple months some glitch occurred where whenever I added pages it added them to the second page instead of the last page and I couldn’t even move these new pages to the back of the notebook. This meant I could no longer add pages to my SAT notes notebook. I tried to see if the same thing occurred and tested it out on two other notebooks with the same result; I could no longer add pages anywhere but the second page. After troubleshooting to the best of my ability I decided to simply sync my notes to iCloud, delete the app and reinstall it. After reinstalling I downloaded all my notes back onto my iPad Pro except three of my notebooks (the same three I was using when the glitch occurred) have turned grey and are inaccessible. I’ve now lost my SAT, Arabic and biology notes. I therefore advise anyone reading this to not download this app if they wish to use it for anything important because their documents will not be safely stored and can be lost just as mine.

Will become better with time

This is a great app, and so far I’m loving most of the changes made from GoodNotes 4. The app is fast and easy-to-use, and the redesigned file management is amazing. However, I’d like to see more tools, like perhaps a ruler and protractor, as I mainly use the app for maths work. I’d also like to see the ability to have more than 3 different pen colours in the menu bar, as I often switch between 4 colours when taking notes. Most importantly however, is that I’d like to see the return of the option to have my pen colour presets available at the bottom of the screen when using the zoom feature, like you could in GoodNotes 4. This meant that I didn’t have to constantly move my hand up to the top of the screen to change my pen colour. Improved palm rejection would also be useful: I find myself sometimes moving the page when really I was just writing normally.

A great app gets even better

I’ve been a version 4 user for some time now having tried a number of note taking apps on the iPad in the past few years. Having upgraded today I have to say I am loving version 5.
The app seems cleaner and the ability to search across all notebooks is a game changer for me. It’s now simpler to do common tasks with a single click given the new toolbar and reorganised layout. I’m not a huge fan of the additional toolbar, but if you’ve only got one notebook open it saves an additional line where your notebook tabs would be.
Migrating all my notes from v4 to v5 was very simple as I have been using iCloud as my backup. Literally one click.
My only slight gripe is that the “yellow” paper colour I used in version 4 seems to have changed slightly in version 5, so I can see the difference in multi-page view in the pages I added from within version 5.
Other subtle changes such as auto fill with shapes and straight line drawing with the highlighter are really nice touches that just add more value to the app.
The one feature I’d still like to see is the ability to record audio in sync with the notes being taken. Notability does this and it was a feature I regularly used. It’s far from a deal breaker with GoodNotes but if the dev team are looking for something to do ... !!
