A book of prayers, published in 1559 that would have been used by Queen Elizabeth. She was a Protestant at a time when many people in her country were Catholic. She was a stout religious reformer. Her older sister, Mary, a zealous Catholic, had been the cause of hundreds of Protestant deaths in her attempts to eradicate the "heretics" and reestablish England's relationship with the Vatican. When Elizabeth ascended to the throne, she resurrected the Church of England that her father, Henry VIII, began. The book contains a wonderful introduction that helps acquaint the reader with the events leading up to the time this prayer book was in use.
